Which Publix stores are hiring right now?

Patti Breckenridge

Patti Breckenridge

This is a question we hear daily, and for good reason.  When people want to work in our stores, they want to know where and what the openings are.

The most critical openings are posted on our Careers website .

They are also posted on our Careers Facebook page .

These are usually positions that require some experience in cake decorating, meat cutting, baking or food preparation.  Right now we have 65 positions on our Critical Openings list.  They include:

  • Bakers
  • Cake Decorators
  • Deli Clerks
  • Grocery Clerks
  • Meat Clerks
  • Meat Cutters
  • Pharmacy Technicians
  • Wine Specialists

Since we have more than 1,000 stores, there are many more openings than the ones we publish on the Critical Openings list.   Why aren’t all of them listed there?  Here’s why:  They change constantly – too fast for us to capture and publish before they are filled.  When Store Managers need help finding applicants for a certain position, they alert our recruiters and we post the information on our Critical Openings list.  But when Store Managers have a lot of active applications for an opening, they move quickly to interview and hire the best candidates.

So if you’re looking for an opportunity to work at a Publix store, here is my advice:

  • Go to the Job Application Center kiosk in the Publix store where you most want to work.   You will need 30-40 minutes to complete the application process.  The JAC, as we call it, is usually at the front of the store.  If you can’t find it, any store associate can show you where it is.
  • After applying, go to the Customer Service desk and ask to speak with a manager.  Then briefly explain why you would make a great Publix associate.  Ask what openings there are in the store, but please know that not every manager will know about every opening in the store.  If you want to, go speak to the manager in the department where you most want to work.
  • Your application can be seen at other Publix stores in the area.  So feel free to stop by some of those stores to talk with managers there about your interest in working for our company.
  • You will only be called if a manager wants to interview you.  We receive nearly 2 million applications per year for about 50,000 openings, so we unfortunately can’t call everyone.

Yes, it takes some initiative to get noticed.  And even that doesn’t guarantee an interview.  But if you want to work for one of the best companies in the world, I believe you will consider these steps well worth the effort.

Dear Patti, I work at a large supermarket chain in the midwest. I have been in this industry for 25 years and would like to relocate to the Gainesville, Fla area. I dont have access to your companies’ kiosk so I cant apply that way. Please help me to apply to your company as I have worked nearly all positions in the grocery retail field. I have heard wonderful things about Publix Supermarkets

Hello, My name is Michael Clark My parents own an IGA up north in VT and I have been cutting meat there for about 4 years with 1 year as Manager. Anyways I have relocated to Ocala Florida to be closer to my family which recently moved down here to Florida. I am looking for a Publix meat cutting job. I applied at the kiosk about 2 months ago at 1 of these publix’s in Ocala and have not heard anything from them. My question is, how do I keep my application active and how do I get the stores around here to actually look at it? I do have a job right now at a golf course but wish to pursue my career in meat cutting because I really do enjoy it. I am also very interested in cutting meat at a Publix because I have heard great things about the company

I just found out why no one may be calling you, Michael. Your application is inactive. You have to update it monthly, a process which only takes about 2 minutes.
Please update it immediately, then send me your contact information, and I will have a recruiter contact you.

    Hello!

I am a college student looking to begin an internship with Publix, however I hope to be hired at one of the upcoming stores here in Charlotte, NC. Do you know how I would apply there, or is my application still in the system? I am kind of in the process of being hired at the Fort Mill, SC location, but I am still looking for reliable transportation so it is kind of at a stand still right now.
Anyway, I’d appreciate it if you could help me out! I realize that didn’t make much sense, so please feel free to email me or something!

    Thanks for what you do!

    Hello Patti,

I just have a quick question. If you apply at one Publix your application be considered for all stores or just the one you filled the application at? The reason why I”m asking is the location where we live is close to several Publix stores. Thank you for your time and this blog. Makes things a lot easier.

    • Patti Breckenridge
      Patti Breckenridge February 25, 2014 at 10:18 am #

The good news is that not only can managers at other stores see your application, but at least 30% of the time, candidates are hired at a different store than the one where they applied. I hope this helps you!
      Patti

  10. jazzjoe February 24, 2014 at 6:50 pm #

Hi Patti .. hopefully found you doing fantastic . I understand the first step should it to be visiting the stores at the job applying kiosk .. but was me to ask you .. is there a possibility applying through online ? .. or the exclusive way of it is going to store .

    • Patti Breckenridge
      Patti Breckenridge February 25, 2014 at 10:21 am #

We require people to apply at a store for three reasons: (1) So they can get a good feel as to whether Publix is a place they want to work. (2) So there is a manager nearby in case they have questions. (3) So that we know they are in the area and ready to be hired. Online applications allow people from far away to apply. I hope this helps!

    Hi Patti,

Regarding the new store being built in Greenwood, SC. I am interested in a Produce Dept. Manager or Assistant position. I have over 30 years in the grocery business and 25 years as a produce manager, mostly for a major chain in northeast. I am now in South Carolina as a produce manager for a large chain in this area. Can you give me some insight into applying or interviewing for the Greenwood store? Resume and references are available.

    Thanks,
    Fran

      Patti Breckenridge February 25, 2014 at 10:27 am #

      Fran:

Thank you for your interest in working at our new store in Greenwood.
We fill management positions through promoting from within.
The only exception is when we don’t have an associate ready for an entry level management position in Bakery or Deli.
Thus, you likely would have to start in an hourly position.
Your experience, of course, would help you move up faster than others as long as you learned our culture and practices and performed well.

      Hi uncleeagle,

Great news! You can apply at the Job Application Center kiosk in any nearby Publix store. All of the surrounding stores are accepting applications for this new store. After you apply, speak with a manager and let him or her know you are interested in working within the new store location. This link provides a starting point for some helpful information about working in our store jobs. If you go deeper into the site through links at that page, you’ll find job descriptions for the different store positions and more. I hope this helps.

      Maura Satchell February 27, 2014 at 3:12 pm #

      Hi flutediva,

I think you’re looking for flexible scheduling and, yes, we offer that, although it helps your chances of getting selected for an opening if you are available at nights AND at least one weekend day shift. You’ll want to go to your local Publix store and apply at the Job Application Center kiosk. The process can take up to 40 minuts all together. Information at this page and those linking to it will help you know what you’re most interested in, how to apply and how to prepare for the interview, too. After applying, if you get a moment, see if you can speak with a manager at the store and share that you’ve applied. Let him or her know what you have to offer and why you’d make a great associate. I hope this helps and let me know if you have more questions. – Maura Satchell

Hello, Can you please advise me as to how I may go about getting an Informational Interview within local Publix Stores. I have applied via store terminals but have yet to hear anything positive as yet. Our local Publix is a great store and the Associates I have met are very welcoming and able so I would love to work there. Could you also reassure me about employing older workers ( I am 59) I would appreciate any and all advice that would enable me to become a Publix Associate. Thank you.

    • Patti Breckenridge
      Patti Breckenridge March 7, 2014 at 1:45 pm #

      Mark:

Thank you for your interest in working at Publix! Because we receive nearly 2 million applications a year, our managers can’t offer informational interviews. They only interview two or three people per opening.
To increase your chances of being interviewed, please speak with a manager in the store where you would like to work and explain why you believe you would make a great Publix associate.
No fears about your age. Since the recession, our workforce has actually gotten older because of all the talented people who are available.

    Dear Ms. Patricia.
My name is Marco A. Ramos Gonzales and I’m looking for working in the area of New Tampa. I filled an application request form since November 2013 and I’m renewing it every month but until now I didn’t receive any offer for working in your company. I was visiting all the stores near my home asking for any open positions but I didn’t receive any answer. I’m highly expertise as a grocery stocker, because I was working in this position for almost three years when I was living in Houston. I am very responsible, attentive and efficient in my work. Can you help me to find a vacancy as stocker please? The stores near to me are: # 1373, # 0876, # 584, # 00006 and # 00311.

It’s what I’ve done, closer to shopping and talking with Grocery Manager, but the answer is ambiguous, perhaps, I’ll look, maybe I’ll call and be better ……. not a direct answer and know or if you have no chance of getting a position??
Excuse my insistence but if I had no need for a quality work in company hierarchy as yours would not return to ask.

I’m a part-time employee at the Auburndale, Fl Publix. I have been an employee for 6 years at three different stores (moving around from high school to college, etc). I have been a bagger in the past and I am currently a bakery clerk. Now that I have a bachelor’s degree, I would love to move up! Would you please send me recruiter’s info for my area? The main question is whether you want to stay in retail or work in a support facility.
If you want to stay in retail, your Store Manager and District Manager would be your best advisors.

Good Afternoon. My son is looking to get his first job at Publix. He is 14 and will be 15 in a few months. Does Publix hire 14 year olds and what stores are hiring in the Clayton/Henry County area (30303 or 30281 zip code)?

    Thanks

    • Patti Breckenridge
      Patti Breckenridge March 10, 2014 at 4:51 pm #

We do hire a few 14-year-olds, but most Store Managers prefer them to be 15 or 16.
Openings in our stores change so quickly on a daily basis that we don’t keep track of them here at our corporate headquarters.
The best way to find out is to ask the Store Manager.
Thank you for your interest in Publix!

Hi, I am 14 and looking for a job. (Need the money) This would be my first job. I’m a very social person, and just need a simple bagger position. I’ve tried other places, but not many people want to hire someone young, but i’m willing to try my hardest. Would Publix even consider my application?

    • Patti Breckenridge
      Patti Breckenridge March 11, 2014 at 10:28 am #

Thank you for your interest in Publix! We do consider 14-year-olds but in honesty hire more 15- and 16-year-olds than 14-year-olds. The key is for you to talk with a Store Manager after you have applied. They will want to see if you are mature, outgoing and have good eye contact. Them the manager why you believe you would make a good Publix associate.

Hello Patti, I currently live and work in Baltimore , Md and will soon be relocating to southwest Florida area . I am currently a deli manager for a large supermarket chain up here . I have 25 years experience with my current company and would like to possibly find a job, hopefully with Publix, so i can relocate as soon as possible. Is there a recruiter who could help? I can fill an application out at the JAC of the nearest Publix when I go on vacation in May ,but I don’t want my job opportunities limited to a small radius of Publix stores when I am open to any and all jobs at any Publix locations.

    Thanks ,

Hey. im 15 years old. This wil be my first job. i just want a bagger position. Would publix consider to even hire me? If so i need it closer to my house my address is Coventry Green rd Conyers, Georgia 30013

    Thanks

      Patti Breckenridge March 19, 2014 at 10:46 am #

We definitely hire 15 year olds, but each store can only hire so many because of the legal restrictions on how many hours that 15-year-olds can work. The key is to apply at the store closest to your house, then speak with a store manager to explain why you would make a good Publix employee. My best to you!

Hello, I tried to apply for a job at two different stores from Ormond Beach, FL. One of them located on Granada Blvd (Store #00446), and the other on Nova Rd (Store #00203), and both of their Job Application Centers were out of order. What can I do?

    Thank you for your attention.

    Hello Patti,

I am a current recruiter in St. Petersburg Florida but I am moving to Apollo Beach Florida this week. I am currently attending undergrad for pharmacology and would like to work at the publix in Apollo Beach. I worked in a CVS Pharmacy for a few years and would like to have the same position in a Publix as well. Can you tell me if they are hiring anywhere around Apollo Beach for pharmacy techs or do you have the recruiter’s info for that area? Thank you

Only the managers at the store would know that. So please apply at the store and then speak with a manager to find out about what openings exist there.

    Patti,
I have applied at the publix JAC in January and have updated 2 times since. I have also gone to 4 nearby local stores and gave assistant managers or store managers a hard copy of my resume to show that I am very interested in working at publix. I would like to work in bakery dept., since i have taken some cake decorating classes, but I am willing to start in another department where needed. Managers were very helpful, but I was told it was the slow season and to keep trying, that end of march-april they will be possibly hiring by then, but I have not heard anything yet.
Could you tell me what my next move should be? I don’t want to seem like a pest.
I have no experience in retail, but I want to start on a new job path after being laid-off from my previous job of 16 years in which the industry is not very promising. I had always said I would love to work for publix because people I have known who worked for them said it was a great company to work for.
And I believe a more stable industry with opportunity for advancement too.
    Thanks for any advice.

      Patti Breckenridge April 2, 2014 at 10:33 am #

      Ashton:

Thank you for your interest in working at Publix!
The staffing needs in our stores change so quckly — by the hour — that there is no way for us at the corporate office to know what is available.
The best strategy is to apply at a store, speak to a manager afterward to learn if there are openings there, and find out if he or she knows about openings at other stores.
All other stores can see your application, so you don’t need to apply anywhere else, but you can also visit other stores and speak with managers there to determine if they have openings.
Make sure you briefly explain why you think you would make a great Publix associate.

    Hello!
My mother has been trying to get a job with Publix for a year now. She updates her application every 30 days in the store and has spoken with the store managers. She has over 15 years of grocery store retail experience. Do you have the email for a retail recruiter in the Orlando, FL/Winter Park, FL area? She would love to work for Publix and has been trying to get a job for a very long time.

    Much appreciated,

      Erica:

You are such a wonderful daughter! I am assuming she is offering full availability. That is key.
Also, make sure she retakes the assessment every 6 months. That too can make a difference.
Beyond that, have her go back to speak with the managers every few months to remind them she is still interested.
      I hope this helps!

      His Rosa!

Thank you for your interest in working at Publix! To apply for work in our stores, you must go to the store. We have this requirement (1) so that we can provide customer service if you have any questions during the application process, (2) because we want to make sure applicants have a feel for our stores before deciding whether to apply, and (3) because we want to make sure applicants are in town. If we allowed online applications, a person could apply from anywhere in the nation.

Thank you for your interest in working at Publix! We receive 2 million applications a year in our stores, so the managers can’t respond to all of them. My recommendation is to speak with a manager at the store where you want to work and explain why you think you would be a great Publix associate. Then ask how you can improve your chances of being hired.

Our store at the Grand Oaks Town Center is being rebuilt. Associates from that store have been transferred elsewhere. When it reopens in the Fourth Quarter, we will transfer many of those associates back to the store, but there may be openings. The way to be considered is to apply at the nearest Publix. The manager of the Grand Oaks Town Center will have access to your application. Thanks for thinking of Publix!

The Opening Date has not yet been set for that store. Please be aware that our managers give higher priority to applicants who have worked in jobs that require a lot of standing, so if your previous office work did not include that, you might have difficulties adjusting to a retail environment or even being considered for a Customer Service position.

I am in need of a job and I am no slacker. I really dont have any other options and I would love some help from you. Please write back when you can.

    Thank You :)

      Mya:

Thank you so much for your interest in working at Publix! We do hire some 14-year-olds, but it’s true that we hire more older teenagers since they can legally work more hours.
I highly recommend that you go to the store where you want to work and speak with the Customer Service Manager. Explain why you would make a great Publix associate.
Then ask the manager how you can increase your chances of being hired. Let me know how it goes!

    Hi,

My name is Josh and I made one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I applied for a job and was called for an interview The next day I got a call offering me a part time job with your company. I’ve been working at the same place since I was 15 (6 years) and needed a full time job so I stupidly turned the job down. I almost immediately realized my mistake and called the manager back. By the time I reached him he told me the job was already filled but to keep my application updated. My question is, do I have any chance at a job with Publix or did I blow it? You’re opening a new store in my town (Knoxville) in a couple of months so there may be openings on the horizon. Do you have any suggestions to help me right this wrong I’ve done to myself? Is there anything I can do to let the management know I would love to work for Publix regardless of the hours as I know I’m a good fit and the hours will come. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

    Josh

      Josh:

Thanks for reaching out. You most certainly haven’t done any damage to your chances with other managers. You might ask the manager you dealt with whether it’s worth your time to keep applying at his store. Be persistent by keeping your application active and talking with managers at other stores. If you received a job offer before, the information in your application is obviously strong enough to be considered. Hang in there!

      Patti

  66. jfrank June 24, 2014 at 2:36 pm #

Thank you so much for your quick response, I feel a little better. There is another Publix in my town and I’ll go over there and introduce myself and explain why I’ll be an asset to your company. When you suggest asking the offering manager if I should keep applying at his store, I’ll do this but when you say apply at his store by that do you mean going in and talking him to every once in a while? I understand I don’t need to apply at each individual store as all stores can see my application so I just need to keep my application active and I can do that from any store’s kiosk? Thank you again for your help.

That’s correct. You have to update your application every 30 days but you can do that from any store.

I worked at Publix as a Cashier and Customer Service. I gave my notice and my last day was May1. My evaluations exceeded expectations and my CS manager would give me a great reference. I am now relocating to Cape Coral, FL and would like to know if Store #01327, #5 or Midpoint are hiring for at least 35 hrs. a week. Will my pay stay the same or do I start from the bottom again?

Do I need to go to a Kiosk to fill out an application again?

    Please let me know.

    • Patti Breckenridge
      Patti Breckenridge July 9, 2014 at 10:29 am #

Each store makes its own hiring and pay decisions, so you would have to speak with the manager at 1327 to find out if there are openings and what pay would be offered. If you have separated from Publix, you will need to apply at the kiosk.

We would welcome your application. Please go to a Publix store and use the Job Application Center kiosk.
Then speak with a manager to explain why you would make a good employee. Also ask if there are any openings.
We have hundreds of people apply at each store, so there is a lot of competition for each opening.

hello, I’m Fabian MIles. i live in Miami,Fl and I did the application and was wondering how can i find which publix is hiring. please contact me: E-mail: romanboss14@gmail.com

    • Patti Breckenridge
      Patti Breckenridge July 9, 2014 at 3:05 pm #

Hi Fabian. We do not have a list of store openings at our corporate office. Our Store Managers determine on a daily basis what staffing requirements they have, so you have to ask them. Go first to the store where you applied and speak with a manager about why you would make a good employee. Then find out what openings they have and what you can do to improve yourn chances of being hired. If you have time, you can repeat this process at other stores in Miami since all of them can see your application. You must update your application every 30 days to remain under consideration.

Hello, My name is Christian. I completed the application process on the kiosk located at 1660 Taylor Road, Port Orange, FL. When I went online today I had a problem logging in. I was being told that the email address was not valid. This would be the same email address used when I completed the application. I’m really hoping that I can obtain a career with Publix. I have heard and read many great attributes about the company and, the employee’s responses. I want to make sure that my application went through smoothly since my email was not recognized. I did apply for a Deli Clerk position at the above location and did briefly speak with the manager. Any ideas as to why my address was not recognized? Do I have to reapply? Thank you for your time and help.

The first time I let her know that I applied and would be very happy to work at Publix because I’ve always admired it’s work ethic. She said it was very nice to meet me and she would see what they could do. The second time I went in just to touch base and see if they were hiring. She said they may be hiring in the deli but would rather have me work as a cashier. She told me she would talk to the hiring manager.

      Patti Breckenridge July 25, 2014 at 10:00 am #

Store Managers make their own decisions about when to hire, and those decisions change daily, given the size of the staff at each store. So it’s best to apply at a Job Application Center kiosk in the store of your choice and then speak with a manager. The surrounding stores can see your application, so you don’t need to apply elsewhere, but you also might go speak to managers at other stores to introduce yourself and explain why you would make a good Publix associate.

    • Patti Breckenridge
      Patti Breckenridge July 28, 2014 at 3:36 pm #

With 1,077 stores, Publix is always hiring somewhere. However, we have no way of knowing here in our corporate offices, when a Store Manager decides to hire someone and when the manager believes his or her store is fully staffed. Therefore, you have to ask a manager at the store where you would like to work if there are openings. I highly recommend you apply BEFORE asking that question since managers often rate the seriousness of a job seeker based on whether they have taken the time to apply. Your application will be seen by surrounding stores as well, so you can go to other stores and talk with managers there to ask them about their openings.

    Hello,Patti:

Yesterday, I went in for an Interview with Mary the Customer Service Manager at the Publix across from Largo Mall(Largo,Fl). Everything seemed to be going fine in fact she said she had 10 candidates to interview some of which she already interviewed and would give me a response tomorrow if I received the job as a PT Bagger. The following day I got a call and she just came out and said another applicant was chosen in such a rude manner and promptly hung up the phone. In total the call lasted 21 seconds. In addition I was qualified and never given a reason – specific as to why I was not hired as this is only an entry level position. my feelings are hurt and hope lost.
    Please offer advice promptly
    Thanks Sincerely, Alban Neziri

      Alban:

I am sorry that you were not provided with premier customer service. I apologize on Publix’s behalf.
I recommend going into the store to see Mary and ask for tips on how you could improve your chances of being hired for a future opening.
Depending on the answer, you might consider going to another Publix store nearby to seek employment there.
Your application can be seen by surrounding stores.

I appreciate the kind words and quick response and everything that you do it is so nice to see that someone takes the time out of their day to answer questions and provide advice to those seeking employment. In addition I am not sure if I will go to Mary to seek advice the reason being she totally shut me down when she had called I felt as if I could not say anything to her but Okay, thanks for the opportunity to have an interview and considering me as an applicant. The way I was treated was not correct as an possible candidate I should have been treated with a little more respect than what I received. However, today I am going to other locations to talk to other managers about why I think I would be a good fir for a position as a bagger or cashier, and see if any positions are available.
        Thanks, Alban Neziri

    Hi,

I am a former Publix Associate (Front Service and Bakery, 6y 4m) who is now looking to be rehired after two years away. I have held temporary jobs since leaving, and yearn to be a Publix Associate again. I was wondering, would the temporary jobs put a “black mark” against my possible rehire? I didn’t leave those jobs in the best standing, due to circumstances beyond my control.

    Thanks much,

    Hi,
I have some questions. I have been applying at Publix for a year now, and updating every month and no call. I am not sure i what i am doing wrong. Every time i go in and they are saying they are accepting application and still nothing. I am in the Orlando area, I have tons of retail background.
    Thanks

    • Patti Breckenridge
      Patti Breckenridge August 13, 2014 at 1:01 pm #

      Jennifer:

I doubt you are doing anything wrong. We receive several million applications each year for the 50,000 openings in our stores. Many of the applicants have former retail experience. So it’s a numbers game in the sense that we can’t hire every good candidate. You might consider speaking to the managers at another Publix store to see if they are hiring.

Welcome to Florida and thank you for your interest in Publix, Evie! First of all, you must update your application every 30 days. But also, speak with a manager in the store every 2-3 weeks to check up on openings there and to briefly explain why you would make a great Publix associate. We receive more than 2 million applications a year, so you need to do whatever’s possible to stand out among the crowd. Have a great day!

Hello, Ms./Mrs. Patti, I was wondering how often they actually hire 15-year-olds. Does Publix usually reject their applications, or do they hire most of the applicants? I just want to know what my odds of being hired actually are.

    Thank you, Joshua Raschke

    • Patti Breckenridge
      Patti Breckenridge August 15, 2014 at 5:40 pm #

      Joshua:

Because of the government’s laws restricting the hours that 14- and 15-year-olds can work, and the tools they can use, we hire some 15-year-olds in our stores, but not a lot. So you would be wise to speak with a manager about why you would make a great Publix associate, including why he or she would be able to rely on you to show up on time and work hard.

      I hope this helps!
