I came across this story and wanted to pass it along.

Once, in a little village, children were always told, “whatever you do, don’t go near the top of the mountain … that is where the monster lives.”

For generations the children heeded this warning. But one day, some brave men decided they were going to go see the monster.

Halfway up, they heard a huge roar and half the men ran down screaming.

The monster continued to roar so loudly that all but ONE man ran back.

That man said, “I’m going to get the monster” and took a step forward. As he did, the monster shrank!!! He took another step and the monster shrank even more! Who are you, the man shouted!

In a tiny voice, the monster squeaked “My name is FEAR.”

Is there anything keeping you from reaching the top of the mountain that stands before you? If so, whatever it is, run towards it with courage and watch it shrink before you!

It is a great story. On a personal note, fear is not knowing where the future of employment with Publix will bring. I am quite ready to invest my time, energy and enthusiasm to make a career here, because I do enjoy the job. However, numerous questions always linger. Will I ever achieve full-time status? As you guys know, there is no upward mobility if you are part time. What changes will occur when the business requirements of the Affordable Care Act kick in 2015? Will my hours be reduced to below 30 per week? Management is always on the lookout for associates that average over 35 hours per week for fear of being penalized. As Mr. George said, you should do what is right even if it doesn’t align fully with the bottom line. By the way, I am a CSS staff with excellent reviews. I just fear continued changes in Publix down the road which will not be in favor of the retail associates. Please correct me if I am misguided!

Thank you for your dedicated service to Publix! Have you talked with your Department Manager and Store Manager to find out what you can do to work toward full-time status? They can offer you the most concrete advice. We have been told that associates will not have hours cut because of the Affordable Care Act.

Have a Happy New Year with fewer fears.
