More tips on landing jobs at Publix stores

My last blog included tips on determining whether a customer service job is right for you and, if so, how to apply for employment in our stores.  This time I’ll share some tips on how to prepare for and take full advantage of an interview if you are called by one of our stores.

If you’re called for an interview

First of all, if you get the call, pat yourself on the back!  Only a fraction of those who apply land interviews in our stores. To be precise, about one in ten are invited to take that step.  Nearly 490,000 people each year apply for jobs at our stores. During the recession, only 50,000 per year have been interviewed.

To make the most of your opportunity, follow these tips:

  • Prepare a list of questions you might want to ask the manager during the interview.
  • Dress appropriately.  There’s no need to wear a suit, but don’t wear shorts or jeans or open-toed shoes.  Don’t let tattoos show.  Be conservative with your jewelry.
  • Arrive at least 5 minutes early.
  • During the interview, make good eye contact with the manager, and answer questions with more than a “yes” or “no.”
  • State clearly why you want to work at Publix and what you have to offer the company.  These are your most important tasks during the interview.
  • Before you leave the interview, make sure you find out when the manager will make a decision and how you will be contacted, one way or the other.  Feel free to ask when the new hire should be ready to begin work.

In the end, if you don’t receive a job offer, please remember that it’s nothing personal.   Managers have to make a business decision on which candidate is the best fit for the job, not which one they like best.  The candidate who did get hired must have had more relevant experience, better availability, deeper knowledge about Publix or strong recommendations from friends or relatives who work at Publix.

Job-hunting can certainly be stressful.  I hope this advice will help you boost your chance of receiving a job offer from our stores.

    Hi Patti!
Much like you, I am very inspired by Publix and the life and works of George Jenkins. That being said, I have a strong desire to become part of the Publix world.

I work in the print industry and it is my dream to work at the Lakeland headquarters in the printing department. I have already spoken with someone there and they said there may be an opening in the near future, and that based on my qualifications I would likely be a very good match.

I have done extensive research on the history of Publix as well as the inner workings of the corporate division.
I truly feel in my heart that I am the perfect one for this job between my passion for the company as well as my knowledge in the design industry, but as mentioned above I know that there will be thousands of applicants, so I really want to make myself stand out when it comes time for choosing the candidates for interviews. I thought about trying to set up a tour of the facility a little later to show my enthusiasm and get a feel for the corporate atmosphere, but i don’t know if that is asking too much or being a bit forward.
Can you give me any advice, Patti?

What great enthusiasm you have! I love it! That would be a great match for our culture!
Who did you speak with before and what positions in our Printing Services Department interest you?
I don’t think asking for a tour would be a good idea since everyone is so busy. We run a lean machine here with little time for extras. Let me see what I can do to help you.

        Thanks for your response Patti!
I have spoken with John Pixley in Printing several times about a Prepress position. He has explained to me the hiring process and he said he would let me know when the position becomes available.
I have actually worked on a couple of sample jobs for the department already and my current employer does regular business with Publix Printing Services so I feel that that may give me an advantage as well being that I know a little bit of what your printing department expects.
I understand that I would have to go through HR first to get an interview, so I just really want to separate myself from the other candidates and not just become another resume in a stack of thousands. I don’t want to be a bother, but I also want to show my eagerness. You know what they say about the squeaky wheel!

    Hello Patti,
I recently entered my application at the Publix kiosk in the 98N store in Lakeland, Fl and would like to know how to follow up that application. I am very interested in working for Publix and would like the opportunity to enhance my chances for employment.

What advice can you give me, at this time, to inquire about my employment possibilities?

      Hi Loretta!

Thank you for considering Publix as you pursue to advance your career. When you are next in that store, ask to speak with a manager in one of the departments where you want to work. Then briefly explain why you would make a great Publix associate. Your application will also be seen at nearby stores, so you can also speak with managers at other stores. I hope this helps!

Hello Patti, I have applied at Publix and am praying they call me in for an interview. I recently spoke with the manager and she told me to introduce myself next time I am in the store, that right now they are full in all areas, but you never know. I do so want to start my career at Publix, and make it my career. I have a bit of a learning disability but once I get it, I’ve got it. It’s close to my home and I live with my parents. I really want to make Publix my first and only job. From Lexington, SC

    Hi, Patti how are you?
I wanted to write a letter of recommendation to give to my manager about this guy who was looking into working for Publix and at the store I’m in. Is this an ok thing to do? or should I just speak to them about the guy instead of writing a letter? Also does each Publix have a store where you can send an email to them or we don’t have that as of yet?

      Hi Brittany:

Referrals from our own associates is a very valuable thing. So please do share a letter with your manager.
With regard to your second question, each store has an email that managers access, but you can’t send an email there from an outside email address.
      I hope this helps!
