Publix Jobs Blog - Title
Feature Store - Exterior at night

Welcome Landon!

Part of our mission at Publix is to be involved as responsible citizens in our communities, and we hire associates from all walks of life to reflect the communities in which we operate. We don’t often talk about it; it’s just something inherent in our company culture. On that subject, occasionally, in talent acquisition we hear a story that touches us deeply. Someone is hired with such a sweet and wonderful backstory it reinforces our belief in possibilities and why we do what we do and who we do it for — Publix, of course! This is one of those stories and you might want to grab a tissue (for happy tears).
Landon’s mother reached out to us on our Publix Careers Facebook channel early this year. She has given us permission to share their story and to use her words as well since she best describes him and the circumstances surrounding his job application at Publix store #496, Lost Mountain Crossings in Powder Springs, Georgia.

“My autistic/hearing impaired 14yr old son applied at Publix. Amanda was the manager on duty and she made him (us) feel SOOOOOOOOOOO special and important. She treated my son as if he was as normal as the next person and I appreciate that. She talked with him and she really made him feel like having a job was obtainable.”

She continued, tying Landon’s experience to former experience as a Publix associate herself years ago.

“The values have always been the same. The people have always been a breath of fresh air. I hope he gets the job and is able to work on Saturday Mornings, but even if he doesn’t I’m glad to know that this store is represented so well. Thank you all for having such great values and choosing the best employees.”

You can be sure that message was shared with Amanda’s store manager. That was back in January. It’s been more than three months, but Landon persisted (updating his application as instructed, each 30 days) and we received a wonderful surprise today when this image popped up in a Facebook message sent from Landon’s mother:

"Hello my name is Landon, I am 14 years old, autistic & hearing impaired and I just got my 1st job at Publix"

“Words can’t describe the feeling that went through all of us in my office when he accepted the job offer and told us his plans to save his money to purchase video games, for acting lessons, and to help adopt a dog,“ Landon’s store manager said when we reached out to him.

So, celebrate with us today, one of those life-affirming occasions and join us in welcoming Landon, a new associate to Publix!

Apex 1544We’re opening our first two new stores in the state of Virginia soon, in Glen Allen. To get ready, though, we are scouting for some great new associates to deliver our legendary Publix customer service. Family is a theme of many of the responses: “Because you are going to have a new family,” was one reply. Another went further: “We’re a family, a friend, and always there for our customers.” It is true, your coworkers and customers become special friends and sometimes, you even think of them as family!

Another theme is the company’s caring culture, whether it is for our customers, our associates, or our community: “It’s easily the best customer oriented company in the world” and “It is the best company to work for,” and “A company that takes care of you and yours.”

Other single word answers that sum up reasons you might want to join Publix include

  • Benefits
  • Teamwork

Publix 9th Among People Magazine’s Inaugural “50 Companies that Care” list!

People MagazineIn yet another validation of the caring and generous legacy of our founder, George Jenkins, Publix has been named among the top 10 in People Magazine’s People’s inaugural “50 Companies That Care” list.

“It’s so humbling that this recognition was based on feedback from Publix associates. Being a servant leader to our associates and our communities is part of what we pride ourselves on, so it’s an honor to be recognized as a company that cares,” Vice President of Human Resources Alison Midili Smith said.

To identify the “50 Companies That Care,” People partnered with Great Place to Work® to produce the list using the research firm’s extensive database and inside knowledge of outstanding workplaces around the globe.  The list is based on nearly 370,000 employees’ responses to survey questions asking them to rate how their companies treat them on a day-today basis.  The list also takes into account employees’ personal stories about the difference their workplaces have made in their lives and in their communities – and the generosity of their organizations’ benefits, financial donations, and volunteerism.

US Navy Vet James feels at home at Publix

James Jordan Vet LR

James served eight years in the U.S. Navy on a nuclear submarine. He came to Publix more than 15 years ago and is now part of our Education Training and Development as a Training Developer.  And transitioning into a civilian career  with Publix was a no-brainer for him.

“Publix is a great company that has tremendous respect for the military,” he explained. “They’ll make you feel right at home.” In fact, James met his wife Angela there.

Eager to find a great job in the civilian world after working in the U.S. Military?

“A lot of jobs in the Navy translate well to jobs here at Publix, especially in the Manufacturing and Distribution areas,” James said. “And there’s plenty of opportunity in Publix, when you consider our footprint.”

James is referring to Publix’s expansive operations in the Southeastern U.S. Publix has more than 1140 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South and North Carolina and Tennessee. And we’ll be adding stores in Virginia in the coming months. Award-winning as both an employer and a brand, Publix employs more than 200,000 associates.

In addition to career growth and opportunity, as the nation’s largest employee-owned company, Publix offers a culture not too different from that of the U.S. military. Here, there is an emphasis on structure, associate commitment and loyalty, training and discipline . The mission comes first and we are a closely knit team all working toward that mission because it benefits us as associates and owners.

Does this sound the like the kind of company you’d like to explore after your military service? Visit this page to apply for employment in one of our stores. For job openings among our corporate, distribution, manufacturing, industrial maintenance or IT areas, start your search here.

Can you say goosebumps?

For the 20th consecutive year, Publix has been named among Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For,” with a dramatic jump from no. 67 last year to 21 on the 2017 list. We are one of only 12 companies to have made the list every year since its inception in 1998 and this year, earned recognition as one of the Great Place to Work legends.

To compile the list, Fortune works with Great Place to Work each year to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America, gathering feedback from more than 230,000 people. “Each company’s score is based on Trust Index survey feedback from a random sample of employees,” Fortune explains. “People anonymously assess their workplace, including the quality of their leaders, support for their personal and professional lives, and their relationships with colleagues. Survey results are compared with peer organizations of like size and complexity and are highly reliable statistically.” The remainder of the ranking is obtained from scores of a Culture Audit management questionnaire submitted by each company, which provides information such as compensation and benefits, hiring practices, recognition, training, and diversity programs to the Great Place to Work organization.

“You continue to make Publix great because of your passion and commitment,” Publix CEO & President Todd Jones told associates in an internal message.  “You make me proud to be Publix.”

Publix is tops in Customer Experience!

Temkin Customer ExperienceWe’ve done it again! The 2017 Temkin Ratings have been released for Customer Experience. Publix is again No. 1 among all companies , and our percentage went up from 81% last year to 84% this year. This is the third consecutive year we’ve held the number one position among all companies. Rounding out the top three positions are Texas-based supermarket chain H-E-B and fast-food chain Chick-fil-A.

Not familiar with Temkin? The Temkin Experience Ratings are based on consumer feedback of their recent interactions with companies. The organization surveyed consumers to rate three components of the experience, Success, Effort, and Emotion, on a 7-point scale. For each component, Temkin takes the percentage of consumers that gave a rating of 6 or 7 and subtract the percentage that gave a rating of 1, 2, or 3. This results in a “net goodness” rating for each of the three components. The overall Temkin Experience Rating is an average of the three “net goodness” percentages.

During the 2016 Publix United Way Campaign, associates raised $35.5 million! With a Publix Charities match of $26.5 million, the total giving for the 2016 campaign is $62 million.

To thank Publix associates for our support and generous giving, Alan H. Turner II, CEO of The United Way of Central Florida (UWCF) visited the Publix corporate offices last week, joined by other United Way staff members and individuals representing United Way partner agencies and other volunteers. All were here to express the organization’s appreciation during “Publix Appreciation Week” commemorated with similar visits held at stores, distribution and manufacturing facilities and other Publix locations throughout our six-state operating area.

They held signs and enthusiastically greeted associates as we entered the corporate building to begin our workday. In addition to the warm morning greeting, the non-profit community organization provided tasty treats to associates in each of our stores, and throughout our corporate and other support areas.  Now that’s gratitude!  It’s not necessary though, because it warms our hearts as associates to donate our time, money and effort to such a worthwhile cause.
