The third annual FORTUNE 500 “Top 100 Employment Brands Report” is out and author WilsonHCG ranked Publix 39th overall and first among food and drug retailers. Based in Tampa, FL, WilsonHCG is a global talent solutions leader. The annual evaluation and ranking of Fortune 500 companies is based on how well they brand themselves to potential employees based on six key employment branding indicators.
As the labor market tightens, companies face intense competition for talent. In order to attract new associates, strategic employment branding efforts are critical. Attracting top talent, training strong associates and identifying the next generation of leaders are among top concerns for corporate executives in U.S. companies these days, WilsonHCG noted in a press release today.
“The companies that will win at attracting and retaining employees are those that build a great employment brand, and the organizations that ranked highest in our report demonstrate the type of participation, engagement and transparency that’s required to stand out as a top employer in today’s competitive job market.”
Publix, the nation’s largest associate-owned company, is proud to center its employment branding efforts around its positive culture and mission as a responsible citizen in the communities in which we operate. WilsonHCG’s recognition is one of several recent employment brand awards Publix has earned.

Quick! Name a large organization offering discipline and structure, well-defined career paths, a fundamental dedication to its staff, strong emphasis on teamwork and a mission-first ethos?
If you said the U.S. military, we wouldn’t be surprised. If you said Publix, you’d be right, too! You see, as the nation’s largest employee-owned company, associates come first here at Publix. And because we are all owners, we have one another’s backs and pitch in when the going gets tough to make sure the mission is accomplished.
At any given time, there are an estimated 4 million veterans looking for work, and each year, about 225,000 service members transition out of the military. That means a lot of vets are on the job hunt. With our steady growth and stability, veterans, we urge you to think of Publix as your post-military employer of choice!
Here is what a few of our associates – who have served in the armed forces – had to say about how Publix’s values measure up against their military values.
RESPECT: James, a 15-year Publix veteran who served eight years in the Navy, explains: “Publix is a great company that has tremendous respect for the military and they’ll make you feel right at home. “
OPPORTUNITY: Kristle, a nine-year Army veteran who joined Publix as a Facility Safety Officer in 2012 has already enjoyed career growth here at Publix and that’s a huge plus for her. “I love working for Publix because I am able to use my skills and knowledge as well as push myself in other areas. Publix allows me to grow and show my full potential.”
CULTURE: There’s a family atmosphere here at Publix. There has been since the company was founded more than 85 years ago. “I’ve met so many wonderful people here, including my wife Angela. And it makes coming to work not seem like ‘coming to work,’” James explains.
TRAINING: Besides being a strong cultural match, Publix offers robust on-the-job training programs to maintain our world-class reputation and to ensure each associate executes successfully on his or her assigned role and enjoys career growth and success.
COMMITMENT: Don’t take our word for it. Another Navy veteran and Publix truck driver, Robert, , mentors others outside of the workplace and enthusiastically recommends job seekers take a look at Publix. “Publix’s level of commitment to its’ associates makes it one of the premier companies to work for.”
BREADTH: James, the naval submariner helped narrow the focus for some: “A lot of jobs in the Navy translate well to jobs here at Publix, especially in the Manufacturing and Distribution areas. “ There’s plenty of opportunity in Publix, when you consider our footprint:
- More than 1130 stores in six states.
- More than 1,100 IT professionals.
- More than 1,000 pharmacies.
- More than 650 in Industrial Maintenance.
- More than 10 manufacturing operations in Florida and Georgia.
- 28 warehouses in eight locations.
- More than 500 tractors and nearly 2,800 trailers.
- More than 3,000 corporate jobs supporting our stores.
To sum up why vets might want to consider making Publix their post-military employer, listen to Mike, another Publix truck driver. Mike served in the Air Force in the 1970s and has been at Publix ever since, celebrating his 40th year here this past summer. “Publix is a great place to work… the people, the pay, the possibilities are all great reasons veterans should join the Publix family.”
Today we learned Publix is ranked fourth among Best Workplaces in Retail for 2016, according to the Great Place to Work Institute. This is great news and an improvement on our 2015 ranking of eleventh place.

It is Boss’ Day and the Talent Acquisition Team provided some words to produce this word cloud representing some of the great attributes we appreciate in our boss, Marcy. She’s a strong but empathetic leader guiding us with compassion but also with strategic focus and an eye on results. It could be said that, in addition to listing what we see in our boss, this word cloud embodies the Publix culture as a whole. Think about it:
Publix is continually recognized as one of the best places in America to work and throughout our history, our associates and customers have helped Publix grow from a single store into the largest employee-owned grocery chain in the United States. It takes leadership and vision to earn the awards and recognition we have been honored to receive. And we are fortunate to have great training and mentorship programs to develop our associates into stellar leaders!
Marcy is one of those and constantly works to develop each of us who work for her into future leaders too! In doing so, she’s perpetuating the Publix culture. And we’re appreciative of her efforts.
Now it’s your turn to share with us some of your boss’ greatest attributes.
With Hurricane Matthew threatening to strike in the coming days, Florida’s Governor has declared a state of emergency for the state. But as our CEO, Todd Jones noted, Publix fosters a culture of preparedness and safety for of our customers, associates and community. Teams are monitoring the storm track and working closely with our distribution centers to be sure our stores have ample water, batteries and other hurricane supplies and essentials for our customers.
Not sure what you might need to be ready for Matthew? Check out this page for number of helpful tips, suggestions and resources.
Fire safety in the workplace
Next week is Fire Prevention Week and Publix associates who serve as volunteer fire monitors in our workplaces received fire safety training yesterday to be prepared for unexpected emergencies. In addition to learning how to use a fire extinguisher, they learned how to use the EvacuTrack Chair – a device used to safely transport immobile individuals down the stairs safely.
Does all this talk about safety prevention and preparedness strike a chord with you? If so, read on:
