Millennials recognize Publix as a Great Place to Work!

Great place to workWe’ve done it again! Publix is ranked among Fortune Magazine’s Best Workplaces for Millennials list for the second consecutive year, and moved up from 74th to 17th place.  To determine the ranking, the Great Place to Work Institute™ surveyed more than 398,000 U.S. employees from identified companies and analyzed how positively Millennials rated their organizations on over 50 different metrics defining great workplaces —  such as managers’ competence, respect and fairness in the workplace, opportunities for meaningful work, and great colleagues.

This is great news for Publix since there are more than 75 million Millennials in America and Millennials now make up the largest generation in the workforce. Currently, more than 53 percent of Publix’s workforce is comprised of millennials.

“The main generational difference boils down to higher expectations for the level of personal fulfillment and connection they want from work. Employers that work to meet those demands by building a high-trust culture, with a special focus on Millennials in leadership roles, will get ahead in both the talent game and in the marketplace.” – Fortune Magazine

Millennials appreciate Publix’s investments in the community as well as their personal futures, citing the tuition reimbursement program as a popular perk to their employment. The full results of the Fortune 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials are available here.

Three Tips on How to Answer the “Tell Me About Yourself” Question…

You know it’s coming – the inevitable “Tell me about yourself” ice-breaker of a question that kicks off most interviews. For some people, it’s a dreaded question and for others, it’s used as a platform to talk about all things personal.  Here are three tips on how to answer this question and set the tone for the interview so you can land the job.

Talk with confidence and enthusiasm

While it can be one of the scariest questions out there, it’s one that will come up in interviews, and in life so it’s best to be prepared. Answer with confidence, clarity and passion. How you answer that question is just as important as the content of your answer.  If you are shy and unsure, the hiring manager or recruiter will sense that.  So take a breath and respond. Show a smile too, it really goes a long way toward setting an upbeat tone and leaving a positive memorable impression.

Separate yourself from the remainder of candidates

Most likely, the hiring manager or recruiter will be asking this question to all of the candidates you are up against. For this reason, your answer has to stand out. So ask yourself, “How can I break the mold and make myself memorable?” The last thing you want is to be forgettable, but that doesn’t mean you want to go so over the top that you’re remembered for the wrong reasons.  Consider using phrases like “I can sum myself up in three words” or “Most people consider me to be…” so you are stepping outside of the normal answers.

Answer quickly

If you answer this question quickly, it shows you’re prepared. To be prepared, you need to practice.  Practice, practice, practice.  Practice solo, in the car while driving; practice in front of the mirror to gauge your expression; and practice with a friend or family member who will be critical to help you be at your best when the time comes.  Then, go into each job interview knowing this question will be asked and come with answers concise and to the point.  If you stumble at the beginning, it can show you weren’t ready, and since this is such a common question, you should expect to receive it.

As a general rule of thumb, don’t get too personal with your answers. It is fine to start out your answer with a hobby – like running or painting – but don’t go into your life story.  Make sure your answers are relatable to the position you’re interviewing for, too.  Draw lines of comparison from your previous experience into the new position and succinctly address the unasked “why should we hire you?” question.   If possible, slip in what appeals to you about this company and this particular role to reflect that you’re a great fit.

Publix Commemorates Memorial Day

1490705_747499988632373_3180200352427197472_oPublix associates honor the brave men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military and extend grateful appreciation for the sacrifices of the loved ones left behind.

The first Memorial Day was held in 1868 to honor Union and Confederate soldiers killed during the Civil War, but even earlier, on March 4, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln recognized those who sacrificed all in service to our country with the famous words “To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan.”

To commemorate this hallowed day, flags at all Publix offices will be lowered to half-staff until noon. In addition, Publix will participate in the National Moment of Remembrance, which asks Americans wherever they are at 3 p.m., local time, on Memorial Day to pause in an act of national unity and honor those who died for our freedom.

Looking for stability? Look at Publix.

I’m grateful to be an external hire into Publix’s corporate office.  Why?  Because at previous employers, I saw it all.  If you’re like me – having been through cutbacks, closings, and layoffs – stability is a must-have in your next employer.  And when it comes to stability, Publix has it by the truckload.

Did you know that Publix has never had a layoff?  It’s true.  Since Mr. George opened our first store in 1930 – even during America’s most recent recession – we haven’t laid off a single associate.  What other large retailer can say that?

One of the biggest differences that sets Publix apart is what we affectionately refer to as our “secret sauce.”  What is that sauce, you ask?  Simple: Publix is an employee-owned company.  The largest in the nation, as a matter of fact.  That’s why layoffs just don’t make sense to us – it’s not who we are.  Publix is committed to treating us – associates, owners – with dignity and respect.  A refreshing commitment in this day and age.

Interested in joining the stability of a well-established retailer and working your way towards owning the company?  Visit this page to learn other reasons why people choose Publix as an employer.  To apply for a job in one of our 1,146 stores, visit this page.  For job openings within our corporate, distribution, manufacturing, industrial maintenance or IT areas, start your search here.  No matter which you choose, joining the Publix family is a career decision you’ll never regret.

Welcome Landon!

Part of our mission at Publix is to be involved as responsible citizens in our communities, and we hire associates from all walks of life to reflect the communities in which we operate. We don’t often talk about it; it’s just something inherent in our company culture. On that subject, occasionally, in talent acquisition we hear a story that touches us deeply. Someone is hired with such a sweet and wonderful backstory it reinforces our belief in possibilities and why we do what we do and who we do it for — Publix, of course! This is one of those stories and you might want to grab a tissue (for happy tears).
Landon’s mother reached out to us on our Publix Careers Facebook channel early this year. She has given us permission to share their story and to use her words as well since she best describes him and the circumstances surrounding his job application at Publix store #496, Lost Mountain Crossings in Powder Springs, Georgia.

“My autistic/hearing impaired 14yr old son applied at Publix. Amanda was the manager on duty and she made him (us) feel SOOOOOOOOOOO special and important. She treated my son as if he was as normal as the next person and I appreciate that. She talked with him and she really made him feel like having a job was obtainable.”

She continued, tying Landon’s experience to former experience as a Publix associate herself years ago.

“The values have always been the same. The people have always been a breath of fresh air. I hope he gets the job and is able to work on Saturday Mornings, but even if he doesn’t I’m glad to know that this store is represented so well. Thank you all for having such great values and choosing the best employees.”

You can be sure that message was shared with Amanda’s store manager. That was back in January. It’s been more than three months, but Landon persisted (updating his application as instructed, each 30 days) and we received a wonderful surprise today when this image popped up in a Facebook message sent from Landon’s mother:

"Hello my name is Landon, I am 14 years old, autistic & hearing impaired and I just got my 1st job at Publix"

“Words can’t describe the feeling that went through all of us in my office when he accepted the job offer and told us his plans to save his money to purchase video games, for acting lessons, and to help adopt a dog,“ Landon’s store manager said when we reached out to him.

So, celebrate with us today, one of those life-affirming occasions and join us in welcoming Landon, a new associate to Publix!

Virginia, here we come! (Job Fair in Glen Allen)

Apex 1544We’re opening our first two new stores in the state of Virginia soon, in Glen Allen. To get ready, though, we are scouting for some great new associates to deliver our legendary Publix customer service. If you are energetic and like people, and you are interested in growing your career with the nation’s largest employee-owned company, join us at this hiring event! If you have friends that are looking for a rewarding future with a great company, bring them along too.

Why might you want to join Publix? We asked our Publix Careers Facebook fans that very question.

Family is a theme of many of the responses: “Because you are going to have a new family,” was one reply. Another went further: “We’re a family, a friend, and always there for our customers.” It is true, your coworkers and customers become special friends and sometimes, you even think of them as family!

Another theme is the company’s caring culture, whether it is for our customers, our associates, or our community: “It’s easily the best customer oriented company in the world” and “It is the best company to work for,” and “A company that takes care of you and yours.”

Other single word answers that sum up reasons you might want to join Publix include

  • Benefits
  • Teamwork
  • Opportunity

Publix 9th Among People Magazine’s Inaugural “50 Companies that Care” list!

People MagazineIn yet another validation of the caring and generous legacy of our founder, George Jenkins, Publix has been named among the top 10 in People Magazine’s People’s inaugural “50 Companies That Care” list.

“It’s so humbling that this recognition was based on feedback from Publix associates. Being a servant leader to our associates and our communities is part of what we pride ourselves on, so it’s an honor to be recognized as a company that cares,” Vice President of Human Resources Alison Midili Smith said.

To identify the “50 Companies That Care,” People partnered with Great Place to Work® to produce the list using the research firm’s extensive database and inside knowledge of outstanding workplaces around the globe.  The list is based on nearly 370,000 employees’ responses to survey questions asking them to rate how their companies treat them on a day-today basis.  The list also takes into account employees’ personal stories about the difference their workplaces have made in their lives and in their communities – and the generosity of their organizations’ benefits, financial donations, and volunteerism.

Does the idea of working for a company that cares about its associates, its community, and its environment sound good to you? We operate in six states and employ more than 200,000 associates.  For job openings among our corporate, distribution, manufacturing, industrial maintenance or IT areas, start your search here.
