It is Boss’ Day and the Talent Acquisition Team provided some words to produce this word cloud representing some of the great attributes we appreciate in our boss, Marcy. She’s a strong but empathetic leader guiding us with compassion but also with strategic focus and an eye on results. It could be said that, in addition to listing what we see in our boss, this word cloud embodies the Publix culture as a whole. Think about it:
Publix is continually recognized as one of the best places in America to work and throughout our history, our associates and customers have helped Publix grow from a single store into the largest employee-owned grocery chain in the United States. It takes leadership and vision to earn the awards and recognition we have been honored to receive. And we are fortunate to have great training and mentorship programs to develop our associates into stellar leaders!
Marcy is one of those and constantly works to develop each of us who work for her into future leaders too! In doing so, she’s perpetuating the Publix culture. And we’re appreciative of her efforts.
Now it’s your turn to share with us some of your boss’ greatest attributes.
With Hurricane Matthew threatening to strike in the coming days, Florida’s Governor has declared a state of emergency for the state. But as our CEO, Todd Jones noted, Publix fosters a culture of preparedness and safety for of our customers, associates and community. Teams are monitoring the storm track and working closely with our distribution centers to be sure our stores have ample water, batteries and other hurricane supplies and essentials for our customers.
Not sure what you might need to be ready for Matthew? Check out this page for number of helpful tips, suggestions and resources.
Fire safety in the workplace
Next week is Fire Prevention Week and Publix associates who serve as volunteer fire monitors in our workplaces received fire safety training yesterday to be prepared for unexpected emergencies. In addition to learning how to use a fire extinguisher, they learned how to use the EvacuTrack Chair – a device used to safely transport immobile individuals down the stairs safely.
Does all this talk about safety prevention and preparedness strike a chord with you? If so, read on:
The Loss Prevention and Safety Department is responsible for reducing losses to our customers, our associates, and our company. Today we held our ever-popular Cupcake Sale in Human Resources to raise money for United Way. This annual event draws huge crowds and broad smiles. At last count, we had nearly a dozen donors participating with tasty variations including peanut butter, lavender, maple and apple, and more.
Last year, Publix associates pledged $33.4 million to United Way — another record in associate generosity. Combined with Publix Super Markets Charities’ $25.3 million match, our total contribution to United Way was $58.7 million and Publix is considered an Outstanding Strategic Partner of the more than 125-year-old organization. Our own Greta DuPuy received the United Way of Central Florida’s Employee Coordinator of the Year award for 2015.
During last year’s campaign at our five stores in Bay County, Florida, associates pledged more than $205,000 — the highest contributor in their community — and the funds are benefiting numerous agencies and programs in the area. These associates — and countless others across our operating area — don’t give back for the recognition. We give because it’s the right thing to do.
Our 2016 United Way campaign kicked off Sept. 1, and, in addition to our modest fundraiser in H.R. (one of several we’re holding, by the way), in our corporate offices, alone, associates are holding a number of other events to raise money for the organization that touches so many lives in our local communities. This season’s events include a Hot Dog sale, Breakfast Buffet, a Silent Auction, CD Thrift Sale and more! We’re doing all this because we believe in the #LiveUnited effort.
Help us expand our horizons, and share with us some of the clever and creative fundraising efforts you’ve participated in for your local United Way organization.

What makes our culture so different here at Publix?
One reason is the time, effort and energy we put into developing our most important resource: our associates!
Our Publix Associate Career Fairs are a great example of this. Held periodically throughout the year in participating districts, these events are for store associates interested in progressing in their careers at Publix. It gives them a chance to meet with managers at the department, store and district level to learn more about their jobs, jobs in their or other departments that might interest them, and about what it might take to progress into management. We think it’s a great program, and the enthusiastic attendance by associates eager to grow in their Publix careers suggests it’s a popular one. And it only makes sense to invest in our associates – since Publix is an associate owned company!
But don’t take our word for it! See for yourself:
Moving up from 388 to 317, Publix is again part of that elite group of companies named among the FORTUNE Global 500 largest companies. These rankings change each year, based on factors affecting each country’s own and the global economy. Publix finds itself among the top 15 of Food and Drug Stores on the list and has been a member of the Global 500 list for 22 years.
In addition to it’s position on the FORTUNE Global 500 list, Publix is also ranked #87 on the FORTUNE 500 largest companies (U.S.), #49th among the FORTUNE World’s Most Admired Companies, and #67 on the FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For list.
The FORTUNE Global 500 ranks by total revenues those largest of global corporations located worldwide that publish their financial data and report their figures (all or some) to a government agency. For 2015, FORTUNE’s Global 500 largest companies generated more than $27 trillion in revenues and $1.5 trillion in profits. These companies are represented by 33 countries and employ a combined 67 million people worldwide.
Career website Glassdoor named Publix among it’s Candidates’ Choice Awards winners as one of the nation’s top 50 Best Places to Interview. The award recognizes employers with the highest percentage of job candidates who have reported a positive interview experience over the past year. Glassdoor arrived at the ratings based solely on feedback shared by job candidates on Glassdoor, Publix ranked No. 11 overall and was rated highest in the grocery stores and supermarkets category.
