2017 — That’s a wrap!

Picture12As we prepare to head into 2018, let’s take a moment to reflect on 2017 – and what a year it’s been for Publix Super Markets! We opened 44 new stores this year and hired more than 64,000 associates – most of them into our stores. Almost 3,000 new hires joined our support teams in Corporate, Distribution, Manufacturing, Industrial Maintenance, Pharmacy and IT.

We experienced significant growth in 2017 – adding Virginia to the list of states in which we operate. Our growth and promote from within philosophy led to the promotion of over 4,500 managers in our stores this year, and we expect continued internal opportunity next year.

The way Publix grows the careers of its associates gained special attention this year when we were recognized for two prestigious awards as employer of choice for women and diversity. Millennials, too, find Publix a Great Place to Work according to Fortune’s most recent ranking of that age bracket. We also ranked on USA Today’s list of “Companies with the Best Managers” and were included in Indeed’s “Top 5 Hottest Retail Companies for 2017.” We are honored and humbled by these recognitions. And we’re truly grateful to our associates as we drive towards continued excellent performance.

There is so much more to add to this year-end wrap-up. For instance, how we pulled together as a company to serve our communities in need before, during, and after this historic hurricane season. So you’ll have to come back to our blog in January for more on that.

At this time, we’ll leave you with one more fact about Publix in 2017. Of our company’s approximately 190,000 associates, more than 42,000 of them have 10 or more years of service with the company. If you do the math, that’s 22% – nearly a quarter of the company – that has been a member of the Publix family for a decade or longer. As a company owned by its associates, we think there is no better note on which to close out this year.

Are you attracted to the idea of working for a company that is like a big family? A company that treats you with fairness and respect? A company invested in you because you are invested in it? Get fit and get paid as a Publix Selector!

Girl and Guy selectorsEver wonder how your favorite products end up on the shelves when you shop at your local Publix? It’s got a lot to do with our Distribution Centers, from which we make more than 1.2 million deliveries to our stores each year!  It takes a lot of associates – more than 7000, actually – to make sure our shelves are stocked so our customers can get what they want.  There are several different job classes within Distribution, but our Selector position is an entry-level role that can help you get your foot in the door.

Did you ever think you could have a job where you were paid to essentially work out? At Publix you can! A Selector picks product from our warehouse shelves and bundles the product for delivery on the trucks, so the right products get to our stores. Depending on the warehouse, the average weight you’re required to lift ranges from 25 to 65 pounds. Because of the physical requirements of the job, you’ll leave every day feeling as if you just got a great work out! Not  bad, right? It gets even better!  Selectors have an Efficiency Based Pay structure, which means, the more efficient you are at selecting product, the more money you can make per hour.  As a Selector, you wear a headset that quickly tells you how much of an item you need to get, and where it is located in the warehouse so speedy reflexes can mean an increase in your hourly rate.

At Publix, we’re proud of our promote-from-within philosophy, and most of our Distribution leaders started as Selectors and in other entry level Distribution jobs at Publix. One example of the great career opportunities offered in distribution jobs at Publix is Jason B. He started as a part-time warehouse associate. He now manages one of Publix’s largest warehouse facilities.

We recently asked Jason why he thought the Warehouse Selector job is a great entry level opportunity and without hesitation, he was able to rattle off a few reasons.

“It’s a physically challenging, versatile and financially rewarding way to start your career here at Publix! It allows Selectors to learn about our supply chain, from understanding our vendor relationships to what our customers’ needs are at a particular time of year,” Jason explained. “By getting your foot in the door in one of these Selector jobs, you’re establishing a very strong foundation to help advance your career within Publix!”

Financial strength and physical strength in a single job! If this sounds like a good gig to you, apply today to one of our open Selector positions and bookmark the link to see new opportunities that come up later. Remember, your next opportunity may just be waiting for you at Publix!

Raising the bar on food safety

Tim WestbrookIn our effort to be the premier quality food retailer in the world, food safety is of critical importance to us here at Publix, so when we received word we were to the inaugural recipient of the Food Safety Innovation Award from The Food Marketing Institute and the International Food Protection Training Institute, naturally it was a great honor.

“Food safety is a top priority for Publix, and we have taken a leadership role in food safety training,” said Director of Corporate Quality Assurance Michael Roberson. “Food safety is a shared responsibility, and each of us must make a personal commitment to maintain all aspects of food safety to protect our customers and offer safe, high-quality food each and every day.”

The award recognizes companies or organizations that have made an innovative contribution or commitment to food safety and encourages others in the industry to search for creative solutions and implement new practices that keep food safe.

Publix was recognized specifically for its food safety training programs. Tens of thousands of associates and managers are trained and certified in food safety. In addition, Publix has implemented food safety training programs for its industrial operations and supplier community.

Over the years, Publix has received awards and recognition for its food safety practices, including the prestigious Black Pearl Award for Corporate Excellence in Food Safety and Quality in 2013 from the International Association for Food Protection.  This dedication to food safety and quality – which starts with training and certification – really does raise the bar in the super market industry.

Does the idea of working in a company dedicated to quality and excellence appeal to you? If so, check out our corporate, distribution, manufacturing and other support-side openings here. For jobs in our more than 1,150 stores, visit this link for more.

Winter is coming! (And that means seasonal jobs at Publix)

Publix Super Markets Inc. 2017 Winter Seasonal Stores If you’ve lived in Florida for a year or more, you know what to expect as holidays approach: Snowbirds. We don’t mean those winged creatures gracefully soaring to lofty heights. We’re referring to the annual influx of vacationers who relocate to our sunny shores from all points north to escape winter’s cruel bite. Our stores in Southwest and South Florida get extremely busy from late November to just after Easter when the “snowbirds” return to their native habitats in the north. For this reason, we’ll be hiring seasonal associates in stores throughout south Florida. To give you an idea of the breadth of this program, the picture included in this blog post lists all the cities in which we’ll be hiring for seasonal positions.

These seasonal jobs are in nearly every department, most are entry level, and all are highly rewarding for those seeking to supplement their income and work among friendly folks for part of the year. A seasonal job with Publix may be even more rewarding since it could lead to an ongoing job for high-performers willing to give 100% and who show they are a good fit for our company. The cities in which we are hiring are:

If you’re seeking either temporary employment to get you over a financial hump, help your finances go further around the holidays, or are hoping to get your foot in the door with Publix, consider one of these seasonal jobs if you live in one of our seasonal areas.  We’ll be holding umpteen job fairs (well, more than 40) and you need to attend one of them to be considered a seasonal applicant. Learn more at this page and join us at a seasonal job fair near you! Be sure to bring a smile because we are looking for individuals who have a pleasant demeanor and are eager to serve.

We’re honored to be recognized for our great reputation

Picture12When Publix founder George Jenkins set out to openhis first store, he was determined to make it great by focusing on all his stakeholders – customers, associates, suppliers and the local community too. Through the years, Publix has maintained that emphasis, and in fact, it’s ingrained in our mission and guiding vision as a company.

Our mission at Publix is to be the premier quality food retailer in the world.

The word premier is what sets us apart and guides our every effort. And so, it is with great honor that we acknowledge being named 11th on the 2017 US RepTrak® 100: Most Reputable Companies list.

“RepTrak®  is the gold standard for reputation measurement, providing a one-of-a-kind measurement of how the public views the world’s best-known companies,” Reputation Institute explained. In compiling the list, the organization examines more than 7,000 companies and bases the rankings in part on each company’s Pulse – “the emotional connection consumers have to a brand.” Other measurable components are used to produce the final rankings, including products/services, innovation, workplace, governance, citizenship, leadership and performance.

With a 2017 RepTrak Pulse of 81.60, Publix surpasses all other supermarket chains in this year’s rankings and counts itself among an elite group of companies!
