With Hurricane Matthew threatening to strike in the coming days, Florida’s Governor has declared a state of emergency for the state. But as our CEO, Todd Jones noted, Publix fosters a culture of preparedness and safety for of our customers, associates and community. Teams are monitoring the storm track and working closely with our distribution centers to be sure our stores have ample water, batteries and other hurricane supplies and essentials for our customers.

Fire safety in the workplace
Next week is Fire Prevention Week and Publix associates who serve as volunteer fire monitors in our workplaces received fire safety training yesterday to be prepared for unexpected emergencies. In addition to learning how to use a fire extinguisher, they learned how to use the EvacuTrack Chair – a device used to safely transport immobile individuals down the stairs safely.

This involves a wide variety of functions, including training to increase associate awareness, enforcement of loss prevention and safety policies, recovery of losses, and control of access to company facilities. Today we held our ever-popular Cupcake Sale in Human Resources to raise money for United Way. This annual event draws huge crowds and broad smiles. At last count, we had nearly a dozen donors participating with tasty variations including peanut butter, lavender, maple and apple, and more.
Last year, Publix associates pledged $33.4 million to United Way — another record in associate generosity. Combined with Publix Super Markets Charities’ $25.3 million match, our total contribution to United Way was $58.7 million and Publix is considered an Outstanding Strategic Partner of the more than 125-year-old organization. Our own Greta DuPuy received the United Way of Central Florida’s Employee Coordinator of the Year award for 2015.
During last year’s campaign at our five stores in Bay County, Florida, associates pledged more than $205,000 — the highest contributor in their community — and the funds are benefiting numerous agencies and programs in the area. These associates — and countless others across our operating area — don’t give back for the recognition. We give because it’s the right thing to do.
Our 2016 United Way campaign kicked off Sept. 1, and, in addition to our modest fundraiser in H.R. (one of several we’re holding, by the way), in our corporate offices, alone, associates are holding a number of other events to raise money for the organization that touches so many lives in our local communities. This season’s events include a Hot Dog sale, Breakfast Buffet, a Silent Auction, CD Thrift Sale and more! We’re doing all this because we believe in the #LiveUnited effort.
Help us expand our horizons, and share with us some of the clever and creative fundraising efforts you’ve participated in for your local United Way organization.
In order to provide the premier customer service we are known for, Publix has to have a workforce of enthusiastic, committed associates who enjoy making people smile.
