Safety is a personal responsibility

Danger can mask itself as convenience, multi-tasking or forgetfulness. Staying alert is one of the easiest things you can do to keep yourself safe.

The February PreventionPlus topic is on personal safety responsibility — which means Publix wants associates to go home in the same condition they arrived at work. But we can all apply the same principles at home, too. Many standards are in place to help protect your safety at work — required personal protection equipment (PPE), proper lifting techniques, and equipment settings and processes like making sure the slicer blade is closed when not actively slicing.

Personal safety responsibility is about keeping yourself safe by watching out for hazards and following the right processes, but not only when you’re at work. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), outside of work, the most common unintentional injuries and even deaths are caused by motor vehicles, poisoning, falling, choking, drowning, fires and burns, and weather-related emergencies.

Publix cares about your safety, no matter where you are. Visit the NSC website at to learn more about protecting yourself and your loved ones.

Congratulations on receiving a PreventionPlus Challenge Coin, Khalid!

0215KhalidFront Service Clerk Khalid Al-Bishah, #153, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, noticed ice cream from the frozen food case getting a little soft. He checked the case and saw it was too warm, so he quickly notified a manager. The product was pulled and stored safely while the case was fixed, resulting in no product loss.

Khalid also regularly exhibits safe behavior by wearing PPE when working with chemicals, and he teaches others to do the same. For these reasons, Khalid was recognized with a PreventionPlus Challenge Coin.

So far, 60 associates have been recognized with the PreventionPlus Challenge Coin for helping reduce unnecessary shrink or preventing accidents or injuries.
