This month we welcome Aprons cook Teresa Rodriguez to the honorary list of Mr. George Gold Coin recipients. Teresa’s story comes to us from Sandy Springs, Georgia where she was given the opportunity to help a customer in need and change this customer’s life forever.

If you need a recap of the history behind the Mr. George Gold Coin, or if you’d like to take a look at some of the past Gold Coin stories, check out this page on our blog!

Teresa is described as a passionate,05_24_Customer Service_CM_GC_Image 2 resize hardworking associate who loves to use Aprons recipes to make long lasting impressions on the customers who come to visit her at the Aprons counter. She explained that the most satisfying part about her job is seeing customers’ facial expressions when they try a taste of what she’s prepared. Teresa likes to think of everyone who shops at Publix as a guest in her own home, and finds thorough enjoyment in knowing that their taste buds are satisfied. Aside from seeing instant satisfaction from our taste testers, Teresa said she also loves seeing the excitement on customers’ faces when they return to share stories about how much the family enjoyed their meal.

During our chat, Teresa told us that working for Publix feels like being on a winning team that’s unstoppable. Thinking of her fellow associates as a second family, Teresa looks forward to seeing them just as much as she does our customers. She went on to tell us how she and her fellow associates enjoy participating in activities together outside of work such as going on canoeing adventures and of course, having pot lucks! She attributes much of Publix’s success to its associates and how genuinely happy they are to come to work each and every day. Happy associates make happy customers and happy customers prove that shopping at Publix is truly a pleasure.

The Story

It was Thursday afternoon and Thanksgiving was officially one week away. Teresa was at the Aprons counter preparing a recipe to share with customers, just as she did every day, when she spotted a sad face in the distance. Once at the counter, Teresa asked the woman if everything was okay. It was obvious that she was trying to fight back tears just by the look of how hard she was biting down on her lip. Ultimately, the tears began to fall and Teresa knew something was wrong. The customer explained that her husband had recently passed away and she was now living in a motel. What made things worse was that her family was hosting Thanksgiving and asked that she bring the stuffing. She told Teresa that the reason she was given the simple task of bringing the stuffing was because she wasn’t the best cook. At that very moment, Teresa saw the opportunity to help the woman shine. She told her, “Lucky for you, I know of a great sausage stuffing recipe that’s sure to knock the family’s socks off, and it’s so easy to make.” She then helped her gather the items needed for the recipe and told her everything would be awesome.

At a later date, the woman returned to the store grinning from ear to ear. She told Teresa that the stuffing was a HUGE hit and that everyone asked her for a copy of the recipe. She then said that her dad enjoyed it so much, he even told her she should become a chef. Because of how happy it made her feel during such a difficult time to see everyone enjoy her dish, she decided to do exactly that! At fifty plus years old, she went back to college and graduated from culinary school as a prep chef. Since then, she’s received multiple job offers and says that she owes all of her thanks to Teresa.

Kudos to Teresa for truly going above and beyond and for taking the time to teach her customers how to whip up some delicious recipes. We look forward to seeing what she brings to the table in the years to come.

If you’re tired of hitting replay on the same old salad, push shuffle to remix your leafy dish! Avoid the boring and bland by pumping up your salad with these easy tips.

Mix It Up!

With the many pre-packaged selections available in our Produce department, it’s easy to grab a variety of greens. Lettuce options extend much further than iceberg and romaine. Many types of greens offer their own health benefits. Some delicious leafy greens you might not be as familiar with are Red Leaf Lettuce, Arugula, and Watercress. To add variety to your bowl, simply mix ‘em up! Not only will you get a range of nutrients, but your taste buds will have a nice spread of flavors, too. To add even more pizzazz, ditch the salad bowl and stuff your salad in a pita or an edible tortilla bowl, like this Southwestern Chicken Salad!

Toss in the Protein5_22_SW Remix Salad_Image 2

Adding protein will help to keep you full and provide a savory bite to your green meal. Protein doesn’t have to be just chicken, you can pump up the protein by adding items such as salmon, egg, tofu, and edamame ― the list is endless! Have leftover steak from last night’s dinner? Chop it up and mix it into your midday meal.

Dynamic Texture

5_22_SW Remix Salad_Image 3Lettuce already provides a crunch to your salad, but adding a variety of textures like sliced almonds or shredded carrots will help satisfy your cravings. Sauté peppers and onions for a great taste and unique texture. Adding avocado or egg provides a smoother, simpler taste to your salad. Combining different items, hot and cold, makes every bite a little bit different, and that’s part of the goodness! Our Shrimp Tostada Salad gives you all the mixture and variety you need for a dramatic taste.

Sprinkle the Color

Monotone salads are a thing of the past! Toss in a variety of hues when making your next meal. Fruits and veggies are filled with nutrients and are great additions to any meal. Add corn or chop up some red and yellow peppers to add bright colors. If you’re pressed for time, just toss in some dried fruits like cranberries or apricots.

With so much flavor packed into your salad, you won’t need much to top it off. Using oil-based salad dressings provide a mild flavored alternative. Freshly squeezed lemon can give it a zesty taste. If you’re short on supplies or are looking for a new flavor to add to your green dish, try a bolder dressing like ginger. Topping your salad with the right dressing is just as important as icing a cake. With so many options, you can try something new every day!

There are endless combinations that can be made when whipping up a salad. What’s your favorite combo?

We take great pride in knowing that you rely on us to provide quality food at a fair price and in sustainable ways, and our seafood offerings are no exception.

As we grow, it’s our responsibility to ensure that we do so while working to improve the methods by which our products reach their destinations, starting at their source, all the way to your home. Over the last several months, we’ve made a major advance in our seafood sustainability efforts thanks to our participation in the Ocean Disclosure Project.

What is the Ocean Disclosure Project?05_17_SP_Seafood_ODP_Image 1

Working with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (a non-governmental environmental group), Publix and its seafood suppliers have endeavored to create an easy reference for our customers to understand where and how our seafood is sourced. By making this information readily available, along with explanations of the fishing methods and details of the certifications of each fishery, it is our belief that customers will be able to make more informed decisions when shopping with Publix.

How will this help improve the sustainability of your seafood?

The sustainability of seafood products is becoming more important to our customers, and we want to provide you and your family with as much information as possible. For some types of seafood, a truly sustainable option may not currently be available. Making these issues known allows you to make an informed choice, or consider another catch that may be sourced more sustainably.

For other items, a more sustainable option may be possible. The ability to identify these fisheries allows us to work with our suppliers in order to develop fishery improvement plans. We expect our suppliers to meet industry standards, and to make improvements when they have been notified of the results of the Ocean Disclosure Project if it is determined that their performance is not satisfactory and that better methods or processes exist. So far, Publix has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in a dozen plans with the goal of reducing bycatch and make fishing more environmentally friendly.

What will be included in this project?

We’re committed to making information available about as many of our seafood products as possible. To that end, information about all fresh, wild-caught and most frozen seafood products in our stores is available now. With a goal of quarterly updates to this project, we will expand it to include all of our Publix-brand fresh and frozen, wild-caught and single-ingredient aquaculture items available in our Seafood department.

Sustainability is everyone’s responsibility, and we’re working to make it easier for our customers to do their part. This is just one of several projects to which Publix is actively committed — learn more about our other sustainability efforts and what you can do to help.

The old expression, “April showers bring May flowers,” is one we’re all familiar with. We can directly relate it to our springtime months, but did you know this saying was originally an expression of art? In 1557, Thomas Tusser wrote this short poem:

Sweet April showers
Do spring May flowers

Although it can be related to the season, there is a deeper meaning behind the words. This expression is a reminder that bad times, such as heavy rains, can bring beautiful things in their wake, like a garden of flowers.

Whether you think of the expression in the literal or figurative sense, we can all agree that April showers really did bring us beautiful May flowers this season. Check out what’s blooming right now and fill your house with color!

This perennial bulb thrives in the spring and is the perfect way to liven up the color in your home or garden. You can plant or purchase tulips in almost every color, ranging from yellow to a very deep purple. Originating in Russia, this flower makes for an excellent border flower in the garden or a bright centerpiece in the home. And since the tulip is the third most popular flower in the world, second only to roses and chrysanthemums, you can bet it’ll please your family and guests!

These low-maintenance flowers are incredibly bright and vibrant, making them perfect for spring décor or just a simple gesture to brighten someone’s day. Known as the “cheerful” flower, Gerbera daisies can be used to celebrate graduations, birthdays, and much more. And since these flowers are known for being long-lasting, you can look forward to bringing cheer to your home or office and having it stick around for quite a while.

Best known as cut flowers, alstroemerias (al·stroe·me·ri·as) are great flowers to couple with other seasonal beauties in a floral arrangement. Like the Gerbera daisies, they are long-lasting and come in practically every color except for true blue. Nicknamed “princess lilies” and “Peruvian lilies,” alstroemerias are the flowers of friendship, which make them perfect for house-warming gifts or just a “thinking of you” gesture. Be careful if you plant them, though —they’re referred to as “flower factories” and are known to spread and produce an impressive amount of blossoms!

Although peonies (pe·o·nies) are at their peak in the spring, this thriving flower is known for surviving through many seasons – even the chilly fall and early winter! Their blooms are what they are most famous for. They are brilliant, big, and blossoming, making them a perfect flower to spruce up the garden or the home. A fun fact about the peony? Greek mythology says that the physician to the gods was “saved” by being turned into this flower to live forever on earth.

If you’re looking for a variety,  go for the Publix Premium Bouquets. Bright, vibrant, and long-lasting, these bouquets are beautiful for any season. Because these bouquets can consist of many different types of flowers, ask the florist at your store to help you pick out the perfect one for your home or special occasion!

The April showers brought some incredible May flowers. Which ones will you be using to brighten up your home?

In honor of mothers all around the world, May 14th is dedicated entirely to celebrating and thanking moms for all they have done and continue to do. Customers who  are looking to cut down on salt intake sometimes find that the taste of their food suffers. Well it doesn’t have to be that way. Let us help! We sat down with Jennifer Patzkowsky, MS, RDN/LDN, Publix Corporate Dietitian, to discuss easy ways to reduce your sodium intake while maintaining great flavor.

Eight tips to help reduce salt consumption

  • Cutting back on portions automatically decreases the amount of sodium you consume. Next time you are at a restaurant, try splitting your dish in half and sharing it with someone.
  • Focus on a balanced plate by filling half of it with fruits and veggies.
  • Make the change gradually so your taste buds can adjust.
  • Opt to cook with fresh items when possible. If you’re buying canned vegetables or other processed foods, choose those with reduced sodium or no salt added.
  • Use our Better Choice Tags to find products that are lower in sodium.
  • When cooking, use strong flavors like citrus juices, vinegars, herbs, spices and garlic to enrich your dishes instead of salt.
  • Cook with umami! Cooked chicken, fish, beef and soybeans are naturally high in umami, a savory or meaty flavor. So are mushrooms, tomatoes, seaweed, carrots and Chinese cabbage. Incorporate these foods into your meals to create a depth of flavor without adding salt.
  • Shop smarter. Use our low sodium shopping list when buying groceries.

Look for recipes that align with the American Diabetes Association, the USDA 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the American Heart Association recommendations, like our Aprons Carb Smart, Heart Smart and Better Choice recipes. Cowboy Chicken & Rice and our Broiled Shrimp Tostadas are two of our newest recommendations!

Contrary to what you might have first thought, reducing sodium in your diet can still lead to delicious meals! It’s important to be conscious of the groceries going into your cart, use resources like our Better Choice tags to guide the way, cook with fresh ingredients and strong flavors, and make the change gradually.
