Egg carton on marble table

How do you like your eggs cooked? It’s one of the basic meals most of us are taught to make at an early age and a savory addition to any breakfast, lunch or dinner table. While scrambled eggs are easy to make, there are a lot of other ways to make eggs as well. With a few guidelines, you can break out of your shell and learn how to make more than just scrambled eggs.

Baked Eggs

To make a baked egg in your oven follow these instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 325° F.
  • Break egg into a greased ramekin.

Fried Eggs

Depending on your taste preference, there are three types of fried eggs: sunny-side up, over-easy and over-hard. While they look similar, there are differences in the way they are prepared.

Sunny-side up eggs yolks are runny, but only cooked on one side and the yolk never touches the pan.

Over-easy and over-hard eggs are lightly cooked on both sides and depending on how hard you want the yolk, they’re over-easy or over-hard.

Here is how to prepare a fried egg:

  • Preheat a small, nonstick pan on medium-high heat.
  • Add one tablespoon of butter to the pan and swirl to coat the pan completely.
  • Gently crack the eggs directly into the pan.
  • Cook until the edges are brown, but the yolk is still very runny.

To turn your sunny-side up eggs into over-easy or over-hard, slide a spatula under each egg and carefully flip. Continue cooking to your desired taste for 30 seconds to one minute. The longer the eggs cooks, the harder the yolk will become.

Poached Eggs

Poached eggs are made similarly to boiled eggs, but are cracked open in the boiling water instead of being cooked in their shells. We recommend using freshly bought eggs when making poached eggs because they tend to hold their shape better. To master the art of poached eggs:

  • Bring 3/4 cups of water to a boil.
  • Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the water. This will help the eggs become firm.
  • Whisk the water to create a funnel or whirlpool and gently crack your egg into the water.
  • Leave the egg in the water for 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Remove the egg with a slotted spoon to allow the water to drain.

No matter what style of eggs you’re cooking, there are a few general tips to follow. Make sure to cook on a medium to low temperature and time them carefully.  If eggs are cooked too quickly at higher temperatures, the whites tend to shrink and might become rubbery when eaten.  Also, follow  these food safety tips and make sure your eggs are cooked completely.
