Yellow Cantaloupe melons

Summer is here and the fruit is sweet! Every product has a story to tell and this month we want you to meet Melody, a King O’ the West honeydew melon from Turlock Fruit Company. She has an adventurous story to tell of how she got to us!

Hi, I’m Melody! This season it’s my turn to shine, so I would honeydew melon(sunlady) isolated on white backgroundlike to tell you a little about my journey before you pick me up at your local Publix. I was born from a seed on a warm March morning at Turlock Farms in California. Summertime in the West is my favorite because the cool wind blows through our patch at night and the sun warms our skin during the day. I got to grow in the great outdoors for almost four months before I moved on to my next destination.

My days of growing in the field left me with a sun-kissed golden rind that has a natural sheen, and that was when my farmer said I was ready for the next point in my journey! I was so excited I almost rolled to the ground. Thankfully, my farmer made sure that didn’t happen. Look at these photos of my melon friends and me! We were handpicked and laid on these conveyor belts that took us through a fruit wash that got me squeaky clean. Then we went to a refreshing cooler while we awaited our travels.

I was so excited to get to Publix! My farmer has supplied melons to Publix for 60 years, and consider Publix part of their family. My first stop on my way to Publix was the packinghouse. Did I tell you I got in an 18-wheeler? They took really good care of me, and then put me in a chilly trailer. I heard it would be a hot ride, so I sure am happy they put me there. I have never been to the southeast or to a Publix store, but I think I speak for all melons when I say we were really excited they picked us!

One last stop before the store was a quick visit to the Publix produce warehouse. When we arrived, the people they called receivers and quality specialist checked samples of a few melons to measure our Brix (which is our sweetness), and to make sure we weren’t bruised along the way. I was inspected and everything about me was A-OK. I only had to stay for one day before I was on another truck and headed to the store a few miles away.

08_18_MB_Melody HoldingIt was everything I imagined it would be! The associates in their green shirts and smiling faces picked me up and took such good care of me. I was placed on the shelf in the middle of a big, beautiful display with all kinds of different melons. I love looking around at the bright lights and customers walking by. I’m ready for someone to choose me and take me home!

Be sure to speak with one of the friendly produce team members for great melon-picking tips. One they love to share is to look for melons with gold coloring and a tacky-feeling skin. You’re sure to end up with a great melon like me!

I have come a long way, but there is no place I would rather be than at Publix, waiting for you to pick me up. Need some ideas on how you can prepare me? I think I’d be great in all kinds of salads, parfaits, and even a pie! Let me make your day a little more delicious. See you soon!
