Wherever you are in your wellness journey, we’re here to help. One popular lifestyle change many are taking is going grain-free. It may sound daunting, but we can assure you, it’s an easier switch than you think. Don’t know where to begin? No worries! Publix has products and recipes to support you on your wellness journey.

What’s a Grain-Free Diet?

First things first, you’re probably asking yourself … what is a grain-free diet? Do I only eat fruits and veggies? That has to be it, right? Wrong! Eating grain-free is the elimination of all grains, both refined and whole, from your diet including wheat, oats, rice, rye, barley, buckwheat, bulgur, teff and amaranth. Some grain-free diets even avoid dried corn and foods containing corn flour as it is viewed as a grain. By following a grain-free diet, you’re still able to enjoy your favorite recipes and products that your friends and family love, with some minor substitutions.

So, why choose to go grain-free? Some people choose to go grain-free due to allergies or intolerances. Some want to eliminate processed foods in their diets. If you’re considering it, consult your doctor or find a registered dietitian who can analyze your diet and make recommendations to ensure that you are still getting the nutrients you need.

Now that you have the details about what it means to go grain-free, check out some recipes and products you can find at Publix.

Coconut Flour

Coconut flour is made from coconut flesh that has been ground into a fine powder or flour. Due to its higher fiber content, you may need extra eggs, applesauce, water or oil to keep your recipe moist. Try this recipe for our Publix Aprons® Blueberry and Coconut Flour muffins. The sweet and nutty flavor is perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Some stores carry other grain-free alternatives such as tapioca flour, cassava flour and arrowroot starch. Check your store for availability or place a special order at the customer service desk with a member of management.

Grain-Free Starches and Pastas

Craving a pasta dinner? Try bean-based pastas that are grain-free and have more protein and fiber than traditional pasta. Our Publix Aprons® Chicken and Cauliflower Margherita Penne uses red lentil penne pasta. Incorporate starchy vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes or winter squash in your diet. Try our Publix Aprons® Smoky Chicken and Vegetables for an easy all-in-one meal baked in a foil packet.
