Blueberries in garden

July is National Blueberry Month, and whether you enjoy them fresh, frozen or dried, by themselves or in a favorite recipe, what better way to celebrate this tasty little berry than to give it the spotlight? The blueberry is native to North America and is grown throughout the United States almost all year round. The blueberry we all know and love today has only been available for a little over a century, quickly becoming a national favorite since its inception. By the ‘70s, its increasing popularity led the USDA to officially proclaim that July would be National Blueberry Month.

The Benefits of the Blueberry

Blueberries are a magnificent little fruit. According to Publix dietitian Jennifer Patzkowsky, a registered dietitian nutritionist, blueberries are an excellent source of vitamins C and K and a good source of fiber. Jennifer also explains that one cup of blueberries can meet 50% of a person’s fruit requirements for a single day. With that one cup having only 80 calories and being sodium-free, it makes for the perfect summertime snack!
