At Publix, we believe in a better tomorrow. One of our missions is to be responsible citizens in our communities. Because of this, we are always evaluating our own practices within our stores, warehouses and offices while looking to improve our daily operations. While Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd, Publix is committed to giving back to our planet 365 days a year. So, how do we celebrate Earth Day all year?

Reusable Bags

Giving back to the earth can be as simple as purchasing a reusable shopping bag. We’ve partnered with you on this one! Because of you,  we have been able to save more than 5.5 billion plastic and paper bags since 2007. These bags have many alternative uses too.

We are committed to protecting and restoring critical waterways and have collaborated with the Arbor Day Foundation to help. We helped plant more than 125,000 trees along watersheds. These areas are home to a variety of fish and wildlife. The trees Publix helped plant are able to help restore and protect these watersheds and the animals that live there.

The Ability to Save Energy Efficiently

Did you know that we have more than 140,000 LED lights companywide? This lighting has been able to cut our electricity usage by more than 30 percent. We’ve also added LED lights to all of our walk-in freezers, which has lowered our energy usage between 50 and 80 percent. Do you feel powerful when you’re walking down the refrigerated aisles because the lights turn on as you walk by? That’s because we’ve added motion sensors and LED lights to our refrigerated door cases to save on energy, too.

Publix Trucks

Did you know that Publix truck drivers actually help reduce our fuel consumption by picking up orders from our suppliers on their way back to the warehouse? This helps save a trip for our suppliers and saves fuel. Our trucks also allow up to 50,000 miles per oil change. This reduces the amount of oil we have to recycle.

We want to help make the world a better place, but we can’t do it without you. This is why we encourage our customers to bring newspapers, paper and plastic bags and other items like prescription bottles to our stores to recycle.

Celebrate in 2018!

While we love celebrating year round, we do have a few special projects we’re working on specifically for Earth Day in 2018. We are donating to the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership for a Fishery Improvement Project. Every time you purchase fresh tuna from April 12-25, we donated $1 to the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, up to $40,000. With your help, we’ve been able to donate more than $200,000 over the last seven years to support various Fishery Improvement Projects. These projects allow us to have better practices to get the best seafood our oceans have to offer and make sure our oceans are protected for years to come.

We also know that taking care of the planet means taking care of the people on it. By establishing a Perishable Recovery Program and partnering with Feeding America, we’re able to donate unsalable, yet still wholesome foods to feed families throughout our communities.

Jackie J. became a Publix associate in 2017 after deciding to take her love of food to the next level. She began working with the Social Media team at that time and she immediately fell in love with life at Publix. In her spare time, she bakes to relax and creates yummy morsels for friends and family to munch on. When she isn’t working, you can probably find her playing with her cat and dog (Nila and Oreo), at a theme park or watching a Harry Potter Movie Marathon.
