block of Spanish Manchego

We would like to introduce you to Manchego — our Spanish Manchego cheese, that is! Publix Deli Imported Spanish Manchego won the gold prize at the 2014 World Cheese Award Event. Pretty cool! This event was a contest administered by the United Kingdom Guild of Fine Food and included more than 250 cheese experts from more than 26 countries. The competition consisted of more than 2,600 cheeses, so we are thrilled to have been recognized as the best. Keep reading to learn a little more about this charming prize-worthy cheese.

Background

Manchego cheese is produced in the Castilla-La Mancha region of Spain, 08_29_AJ_Deli_Image2which is located south of Madrid. This area is also known as the setting for the adventures of the famous literary character Don Quixote.

Product Attributes

Manchego is a firm, buttery cheese made from sheep’s milk, with a compact, dry texture and an herbal aroma. This cheese has a white-to-yellow hue coupled with a superbly warm and rustic flavor.

Spanish Manchego cheese is aged in seasoning rooms for three months. It is traditionally made by pressing the curd in braided esparto grass baskets, which leaves a distinctive zigzag pattern on the rind.

Fun fact: Manchego is a PDO recognized cheese. PDO stands for “Protected Designation of Origin,” a product label used to protect the names of regional foods. It helps protect the authenticity of cheese made under this name.

Pairings

Publix Deli Imported Spanish Manchego is irresistible when served with fruit and nuts, such as pears, apples, grilled peaches, figs, grapes, walnuts, and almonds. It’s also popular when diced or shaved, and added to both warm and cold salads with rich vinaigrette dressings.08_29_AJ_Deli_Image3

For a lunchtime spin or serious snacking, Manchego makes an incredibly rich grilled cheese sandwich. It also stands well when served alone on a simple cheese plate.  You can use Manchego as a substitute for traditional cheeses on burgers such as our Southwest Green Chile Burgers or Smoky Garlic Cheeseburgers.

When it comes to wine, you can pair this flavorful cheese with a variety of red and white wines, such as Rioja, Amarone, Zinfandel, Pinot Grigio, and Cabernet Sauvignon — many of which can be found in your local Publix store.

Spanish Manchego can even be served as a dessert. Slice it, dice it, and drizzle it with honey, or spread your favorite fruit jam, preserve, or marmalade on top. Sounds delicious, right?

Now that we’ve given you a taste of what to expect when you try the Spanish Manchego cheese, we hope you’ll enjoy the earthy, buttery flavors as much as we do!
