Heller Bros Logo

For more than 70 years, we’ve had a relationship with Heller Bros., one of our citrus suppliers, that continues to provide our customers with top quality citrus. The Heller family started doing business with Publix back in the early to mid-1940s under the name Lakeland Packing Company. Heller Bros.’ General Manager at the time was a good friend of Mr. George and spent every Saturday morning golfing with him. It was this close friendship that built the connection with Publix.

Lakeland Packing kept a close relationship with Publix until the Heller’s closed the Lakeland facilities in the mid-1980s and started shipping from their packinghouse in Winter Garden, Florida, which is still a supplier to this day. The current operations are run by third and fourth generations of the family and they manage the entire process from growing and farm management to sorting, grading and packing.

Heller Bros. owns close to 5000 acres of Florida citrus consisting of red grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, mandarins and lemons. The Heller brand is synonymous with quality and freshness, which is why Publix continues to work with them. After all, the company philosophy is “fresh from the farm to the table.” Florida’s oranges, tangerines and grapefruit are at their best in December, so make sure to stop by your local Publix produce department next time you’re in the store to select your own citrus.

Tips for Storing and Juicing Florida Citrus:

  • Store tangerines, grapefruit and oranges at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • If you want to make your own orange juice, Hamlins and Valencia oranges are perfect for juicing. Fun fact: Two to four oranges produce one cup of juice.
  • For the freshest tasting juice, it’s best to squeeze your oranges right before you drink it.
