It was three days before Thanksgiving and Austin was getting ready to go shopping with his grandmother, Julia. Julia is disabled so Austin spends most of his free time helping her. Taking his grandmother shopping takes longer than if he goes by himself and since they’re on a strict budget, it’s important they don’t get any unnecessary impulse items. Julia insisted she wanted to come and purchase her favorite holiday products since she enjoys cooking dinner for her grandson and family.

Austin and Julia left the house at 3 p.m. and headed to Publix #1567 in Winter Garden, Florida. He went in with the same expectations he has when shopping with his grandmother, but never expected what happened during their visit. As soon as they got to Publix, a front service clerk, Herman, greeted them. Herman has worked with Publix for three years and has been at Store #1567 since 2017. He noticed that Julia used a walker while entering and needed an electric cart inside.

Herman introduced himself and offered to help while they shopped. Austin declined but appreciated the offer. “A lot of people don’t go out of their way to be nice, especially to strangers, but Herman offered to help us right away. His gesture didn’t go unnoticed.” When they finished shopping, they went to cashier Bria’s checkout line. “I was greeted by Bria, who is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Every time we’re in, she’s always such a sweetheart,” Julia told us with a smile.

When it was time to pay, the bill exceeded the amount that David and Julia had available to spend. David budgeted accordingly but some of the extra holiday items they needed for their Thanksgiving dinner made the amount almost $10 more than they brought. David began removing items so they could check out and leave. This is when Herman walked by and noticed the two in line. When he found out the situation, he offered to help David and Julia pay for their complete bill. “I tried to decline, but he insisted and we couldn’t be more grateful to him,” David stated. Because of Herman’s help, David and his grandmother Julia could enjoy their Thanksgiving meal. “Even though we hadn’t met before, I believe that Herman and I met for a reason. I believe angels walk this earth and Herman is one of them,” David emotionally told us.

Herman consistently puts a smile on customers’ and fellow associates’ faces. When we spoke with associates, they mentioned how friendly and funny he is. Store manager Joshua told us, “Herman joined the Publix family in 2016 and is a great addition to our team. He’s always looking for the opportunity to go above and beyond for customers and does a consistently good job with anything asked of him.” When he’s not working, Herman enjoys playing the keyboard and singing with his friends and family.

Herman earned the Mr. George Gold Coin Award for going above and beyond his normal duties. Julia wrote in to our customer care team to let us know that the success of Publix is based off continuing to hire associates like Herman (and Bria) who continue to embody everything that Mr. George stood for.
