Publix culture is built upon the lessons of our founder George W. Jenkins, or Mr. George. One of the lessons he valued was giving back, and he instilled this philosophy in his Publix associates. To  this day many Publix associates are personally involved with local organizations and community efforts. Since this lesson was so important to Mr. George, the Mr. George Community Service Award was created to honor associates who demonstrate charitable community involvement. These associates dedicate their time to serving others not just where they work, but in their communities. They change the lives of children by volunteering with organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of America or Big Brothers and Big Sisters, they help paint homes and feed the homeless. They clean beaches and work with children who have special needs – the potential to give is never-ending.

The recipients of the Mr. George Community Service Award have set an example by giving their time, money and talent to the community and continuing Mr. George’s legacy. Every year, this award is given to five dedicated associates who help the Publix family shine in our communities. They also represent some of the best examples of why Publix is seen as a place our neighbors can count on. The qualifications for this award include:

03_JJ_CustomerInterest_Award_BodyImage2Since 1995, Publix has presented more than 100 associates with the Mr. George Community Service Award. Last year, five store managers, one from each division, were honored with this award. Christi Nelson, Don Bridwell, Max Murray, John Becker and Richard Reynolds received this award for their contributions to their communities.

Ansley Martin Frese, Human Resources Legal Projects Manager, who received the honor for our Support division was thrilled to receive this prestigious award. She said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. I was honored and humbled to receive the Mr. George Community Service Award and was honored to be able to contribute the money from Publix Super Markets Charities back into my community.”

Mr. George was once asked, “How much do you think you’d be worth today if you hadn’t given away so much?” Without hesitation he responded, “Probably nothing.” This award is just one of the many ways Publix is keeping the legacy of Mr. George alive and well within the company.

Jackie J. became a Publix associate in 2017 after deciding to take her love of food to the next level. She began working with the Social Media team at that time and she immediately fell in love with life at Publix. In her spare time, she bakes to relax and creates yummy morsels for friends and family to munch on. When she isn’t working, you can probably find her playing with her cat and dog (Nila and Oreo), at a theme park or watching a Harry Potter Movie Marathon.
