You often hear that Publix was the first and last career for many of our associates. For several of us, including our CEO, our careers began bagging groceries as a part-time job. What you may not hear about are those associates who experienced a fruitful first career they are proud of, prior to finding their home at Publix. Many of these stories we share are represented by of our military veteran associates.

We appreciate the commitment our veterans have made to this country and understand that their level of dedication often makes for stellar additions to the Publix family. Last year, Publix was ranked as one of the best workplaces for veterans by Indeed. Our Publix Patriots blog series showcases real veterans who found success in a second career at Publix.

We are honored to employ veterans, so we hope to spread the word about opportunities found at Publix and prove we’re much more than “just a grocery store.”

Meet James, Store Manager in Jacksonville, Florida

Publix Patriots Body 1James is a store manager and has been with Publix for 25 years. He started his career at Publix in 1994 as a part-time stock clerk working overnight shifts. He also served in the United States Marine Corps from 1992 to 2000.

During his time as an E4 Corporal in the Marine Corps, he worked in aviation maintenance. This is where James said he learned to be extremely detailed, because working with aircrafts means being responsible for the livelihood and safety of those on the plane. It was this experience in focusing on the details that he attributes with achieving great success in his career at Publix.

How James’ Military Background Helped Him at Publix

Just as working with aircrafts meant James worked under a lot of pressure, so does managing a store. “The discipline I learned in the Marine Corps allows me to keep my entire store team on track with shared goals,” shared James. “As a store manager, I set the tone for the entire store.”

Publix Patriots Body 2He feels lucky to have had a career path that was built on the experiences he earned in the military and thinks that more veterans should consider working at Publix. “I have had a rewarding and prosperous career path. Just as the Marine Corps was a brotherhood that always took care of their own, Publix has become my family and has taken care of me. Publix rewards hard work and dedication, two attributes that are prevalent in any branch of the U.S. military.”

James urges veterans who are looking for a second career to apply at Publix. “Apply now, don’t hesitate. Publix is growing faster than ever, now is the time to get on board,” he said. You can apply online on our Talent Application Gateway. If you or someone you know is a veteran seeking employment, we hope you share this story and others as we continue to share these testimonies.
