bowl of zoodles

It’s probably fair to say that pasta is down right delicious. But sometimes we’re not able to indulge completely in this carb-heavy dish. Whether it be dietary restrictions or personal preference that restricts you from eating a hearty bowl of pasta, we have the perfect alternatives for to try. You may not realize it, but it’s simple to get the same great taste with a different choice of noodle.

Making “noodles” with vegetables is a fantastic way to incorporate more veggies in your diet and have a lower carb option to many dishes. The good thing is that there are many options, and you can purchase pre-cut vegetable noodles in our produce department, grab frozen ones in our grocery section or make your own using a spiralizer. Try these vegetable varieties in your next dish:

  • Spaghetti Squash – A traditional vegetable option is spaghetti squash. When cooked, the inside pulls away from the flesh in ribbons or strands that look like and are often substituted as a lower carb option for spaghetti. Check out this Kung Pao Chicken with Spaghetti Squash
  • Zoodles (Zucchini) – You can find fresh zucchini noodles in our produce department as well as our grocery freezer section. This is a great alternative to your pasta recipes or you can enjoy zoodles simply by sautéing it in a little bit of olive oil and tossing together with other fresh veggies like tomatoes and peppers. Check out one of our favorite zoodle recipes Lentil Bolognese over Zoodles.
  • Spiralizing – Using a spiralizer can basically turn any of your favorite vegetables into a pasta alternative. Try replacing traditional noodles by using a spiralizer with carrots, squash, beet root and sweet potato.

If you are trying to eat more plant-based foods, there are pasta alternatives in the grocery section including pastas made with beans such as chickpeas or black beans and lentils. You can also find gluten-free pasta options in the grocery aisle.  These pastas have more fiber and protein than regular white pasta and are available in a variety including spaghetti, penne, rotini, rigatoni and more.
